We spotted these stylish fashionista's at the European Haute Couture event at Hycroft House, Vancouver.

We couldn't resist the perfect red sundress paired with the jacket, definitely a style inspiration. She caught our eyes everytime she strolled past. Jennifer is wearing a red sundress she made herself, with a Suttles and Seawinds (Nova Scotian) quilted jacket by Vicki Lynn Bardon purchased by her grandmother in the early 1960s. Her look is accessorised with a vintage Gucci shoulder bag and BCBG heels.

Judith looks every bit timeless, elegant and classic; the perfect Chanel girl. Judith is wearing a Chanel inspired look and a Furla bag. The yellow gives the right punch of colour for a Spring afternoon.

I read this interview article by TIME Magazine with supermodel Crystal Renn, and really wanted to share it (article in TIME Magazine dated October 26, 2009, the photos have been inserted by moi).

Six years ago, Crystal Renn was an unknown size-0 model who moved to New York City from Clinton, Miss., to make it big. She struggled with her weight for years, however, and finally made the bold decision to switch to plus-size modeling. Now a healthy 165 lb., she is the highest-paid plus-size model in the world, having graced the covers of American Vogue and Harper's Bazaar and appeared in Dolce & Gabbana ads. The 23-year-old talks with TIME about her new book, Hungry, her size-0 modeling days and walking the runway for Jean Paul Gaultier.

How did you get into modeling?

When I was 14 years old, my mother put me in an etiquette beauty school. One day a scout came up to me and said, "Oh, my gosh, you're going to be the next supermodel." I didn't even know what that meant. He pulled out a picture of Gisele and said, "This is who you can be." But he said I had to lose nine inches off my hips. That was the beginning.
You got down to 95 lb. on your 5 ft. 9 in. frame. What was your typical day like when you were a size-0 model?  

Before I began modeling, I prepared for two years, and in that time I developed an eating disorder. My day would involve waking up and steaming vegetables. Then I would go to 10 castings, followed by a trip to the gym for three to four hours and sometimes even up to eight hours. I would eat lettuce and vegetables all day long, but I would think about food all the time.

When you look at a picture of yourself at that weight, what do you see?

Another person. It was very clear that I hated my life. During that time, I felt extremely detached from my body. I didn't feel like me or feel anything at all. The only way to survive was through detachment. I would wake up sometimes feeling like I had the flu times 10, and I knew I would have to go to the gym for eight hours.

What was it like to start eating again?

When I had the eating disorder, I never lost my love for food. I just told myself that if I wanted to be a model, I would have to stop [doing] one of my favorite things. I remember having my epiphany moment and making the decision to eat again. It was pretty amazing. My first meal was what many would regard as very healthy: a salad with salmon, walnuts and olive oil. At the time, I feared that I would gain 100 lb. with one bite. It didn't happen, and I felt superrelieved. I knew I was on the right path.

Do you still worry about your weight?

When it comes to food, I've been through such a deep, dark place with my body that I associate dieting and hating my body with extreme unhealth. I was losing my hair, I had no energy, and I was extremely depressed. I don't really watch my weight at all now. I do make sure that I eat as healthy as I can for energy purposes, but I no longer restrict my calorie intake to feel better about myself.

It took a lot of courage to write about this. How did the fashion industry react to your book?

Surprisingly, I've found the industry to be extremely supportive. When I first moved over to plus-size modeling and I had this new body, I worked with an editor who knew me when I had the eating disorder. She said, "What happened to you? You look so much better now!" At that moment, I made a decision to tell the truth. I felt relief in telling my [story]. I think people in the industry have become more receptive to looking at different body types because of my book and my [decision to] speak out.

What was it like to walk out on the runway and close the Paris show for Jean Paul Gaultier in 2005?

Walking for Jean Paul Gaultier was magical. I had no idea I was ending the show in the first place until I was about to walk out on the runway. This had been a dream of mine for so long, so it was definitely a moment. I never felt so accepted in my life, and I now know that change is possible after all in this industry.

What do you hope other women will gain from this book? 

Women have come so far in the past 100 years. But what holds them back is lack of confidence and self-hatred. Those two things can affect every part of your life. I was at the lowest level you can be. It was only when I accepted myself that I managed to achieve [my goals] in life and work. Through this book, I want women to know that people in the [fashion] industry can relate to them too. Women struggle everywhere with their weight and their bodies, and no one talks about it. I wanted to speak for the unspoken.

Down the Rabbit Hole with Alice...into Printemps Wonderland!

With the highly anticipated release of Tim Burton’s version of “Alice in Wonderland” just around the corner, beautiful storefront windows devoted to the film can be seen at Printemps. Printemps Departement Store in Paris is one of the world’s largest department stores dedicated to luxury fashion brands.

Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland was originally scripted in 1865 by Lewis Carroll (real name: Charles Lutwidge Dodgson), a British author. The highly anticipated release of Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland”, stars Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter, Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen and Mia Wasikowska as Alice Kingsley.

Top designers were able to use their imaginative creativity to make their own Alice inspired dresses. Haider Ackermann, Manish Arora, Chloé, Ann Demeulemeester, Christopr Kane, Nicholas Kirkwood, Maison Martin Margiela, Bernhard Willhelm, and the late Alexander McQueen all have done a wonderful job!

We just can't get enough of coral makeup, it really livens up any complexion and looks extra flattering with fresh dewy skin.

We asked our friend, Makeup Artist, Alex Puck, for his picks of a great coral makeup look this Spring/Summer:

Alex Puck:

For skin, after cleansing and moisturizing, use Bobbi Brown Vitamin Enriched Face Base, the best primer money can buy, excellent for setting foundations and such. Next apply your foundation, my foundation of choice that I like to use on clients is Stila One Step Makeup, or for very sheer coverage Laura Mercier Mineral Finishing Powder.

For eyes, liner and mascara would do just fine, we want to keep it very simple and very wearable for all skin shades. Use Shiseido Smoothing Eyeliner Pencil in Brown to line the top lash line from the outer edge to two thirds in where the eyelashes stop and smudge with an eyeliner brush, also apply on the bottom lash line all the way through. Use Bobbi Brown Everything Mascara to finish off the eyes.

Now here's the fun part when it comes to corals: cheeks and lips! For cheeks, use Nars Blush in Gilda, apply to the apples of the cheek, where you would naturally blush. Many people make the mistake of taking it all the way up to the temples thinking it will make their cheekbones pop, but reality peeps- it doesn't! Instead use a highlighter like Nars Highlighting Blush Powder in Albatross for fair skins, and The Multiple in Copacabana for darker skins from the temples down the cheek bone. For some extra sparkle, dust Bobbi Brown's Nectar Shimmer Brick over the apples of the cheeks and upwards slightly. It's very important to use highlighters and blushes lightly, blending and building as needed.

For the lips apply Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Volupte Lipstick in Peach Passion, and top with Yves Saint Laurent Golden Gloss Golden Pink lipgloss. Although it looks like a very high pigment pink, it comes on as a sheer sparkly coral with dazzling gold specks, very glamorous.

Meandering Around South Granville

South Granville is one of our most loved areas around town. It’s a short walk from Granville Island and about a five minute cab drive from downtown Vancouver (basically just over the bridge). It’s a great neighborhood to spend the day and has a lot to offer.

It is known for its galleries and sometimes called ‘Gallery Row’ by locals. Much of the art around the area is from local artists or artists from around Canada. Even if you’re not in the market to buy art or sculpture, it’s a great idea to visit the galleries. Some local favs are the Kurbatoff, Jacana, Douglas Reynolds, Ian Tan, Challi-Rosso and Monte Clark Galleries.

There are many home décor options around Granville, from large chain stores like Pottery Barn and Renovation Hardware to more quirky stores like Chachkas, 18 Karat, Country Furniture, Atkinson’s, and Peridot. There are also many antique stores like Scott Landon Antiques and Panache. The diversity of shopping really makes South Granville a rich and resourceful shopping experience.

Some of the trendiest fashion boutiques in town are in South Granville. There are stores like Boboli, Misch, and Jack & Jill, who carry amazing brands like Alexander Wang, 3.1 Philip Lim and Michael Kors that can be hard to find around the city otherwise. I must leave with drool all over my blouse every time I step out of these boutiques!

Speaking of drool, the dining around the area is simply delectable. Mouth watering cuisine from charming restaurants like Red Door, West, and Ouisi Bistro will definitely leave you craving for more. Although, you can’t come to South Granville and not try the wine marinated lamb popsicles in fenugreek sauce at Vij’s…orgasmicly sublime…without a doubt one of the city’s gems when it comes to culinary expertise.

I believe Vancouver is a city that has it all…the beautiful backdrop of snow capped mountains in winter, sandy beaches brimming with people in the summer, clean hiking/biking/rollerblading trails with breathtaking views, skyscraper residences and hotels, well trod shopping districts and malls, hippy artsy areas, and some of the world’s greatest dining.

A Legendary Photographer in the Making: Babar Khan

Recently, whilst watching FashionTelevision, photographer Babar Khan’s photography struck a cord (quite rare with my otherwise robot like self). Many of his images capture a raw exposure on human sensation, depicting romanticism, beauty, melancholy, vulnerability, and in some shots, a helplessness. He's done a remarkable job of bringing forth emotions that we otherwise try to conceal, ironically combining beauty and strength with feelings we sometimes associate with human flaws and weaknesses. To some degree asking us...can we not be all of those things at once?

Whilst digging around, I learned that Toronto born Babar studied photography at Ryerson University. In 2003 he went on to photograph a black and white portfolio of personal work in Paris that was acknowledged by the esteemed Communication Arts Award and published in the Photography Annual. He was recently awarded two International Photography Awards, and mounted his first solo exhibition of work.

After seeing Babar's captivating work, I had to get in touch…

HC: How did you get into this career?

Babar: By stubbornly wanting to figure out how the great photographs I saw were taken... sheer curiosity and obsession.

HC: What do you love most about it?

Babar: Having the opportunity to be creative and explore ideas, and being able to work with great talent in unusual places.

HC: How do you decide on your subjects?

Babar: I have an obsession with beauty but not necessarily in conventional terms. I do tend to gravitate towards girls with pale skin and freckles for the way they photograph especially in black-and-white. I love redheads. I'm also really drawn to vulnerability in a person as I think it's an interesting contrast to pure physical beauty. Other times a subject resembles an old movie star or personality and that can be an exciting idea to play with in the image.

HC: Choose one favourite picture you've taken over the years and tell us why.

Babar: Maria With Mask. This is definitely a favourite. There's something really mysterious about it that draws me to this image over and over. I've tried using masks again for shoots but they never worked. Something magical about that particular mask on that girl created a resonant image. The mystical quality photography can have is fascinating.

HC: Something you didn't expect...?

Babar: I didn't expect to embrace working digitally as I always loved the traditional photographic process, but I have come to appreciate its advantages.

HC: What's your personal style?

Babar: I love the Dior Homme aesthetic, minimalism, black, white & grey, and a slim silhouette. Couture elements mixed with street style, contrasts are always interesting in design.

HC: 5 things you currently love the most?

Babar: In no particular order, custom hand-made portfolios by L'Atelier du Packaging, vintage Ducati motorcycles, Gretsch drums, anything made by Apple, and Canon cameras.

HC: Favourite song?

Babar: Right now Empire State of Mind, Jay-Z & Alicia Keys.

HC: What makes your juices flow?

Babar: Having a creative idea and then being able to follow it through the sometimes difficult stages to eventually realize it - there's a thrill in making it tangible.

HC: Last trip? Next one?

Babar: Last trip was Paris, a great source of inspiration and a place where I've spent a lot of time. Next trip... maybe New York City.

HC: Tell us something nobody knows...

Babar: I don't think anyone knows my father was an excellent photographer in his younger years, taking black-and-white photographs in Rome, Paris, Germany and Canada.

I went to pick up mascara this week as mine had started to dry out and I didn't really love it to begin with. My friend recommended I try Estee Lauder's 'Sumptuous'. I didn't try it out in store because I was in a bit of a rush, however, the next morning, after applying just one coat to my short sparse lashes, I knew I had come to the holy grail of mascaras. My eyelashes were like POW IN YOUR FACE but still looked neatly seperated without any clumps. What really hit the spot was my girls from work asking if I was wearing fakies...Yay!!! ;-P
